The world of Atlantica Online MMORPG features real world locations in an alternate world where they are blended with mythological and fantasy elements. But don’t take it literally as the cities are often geographically out of place and heavily altered apparently to makes the game more interesting.  The important thing is you can feel at home in one of those countries you live in or relate with other countries you have been before.  From time to time, we’ll be featuring different countries with its towns, cities, dungeons, and interesting stuffs we can find in them.

My Atlantica guild master “Jaanus”, from France in real life, has shared these photos taken from lush tropical country of the Philippines. Check out the breathtaking screenshots from Manila and Davao after the jump.

Manila: The capital city

Most of the civilizations represented are in different time periods. Southeast Asia resembles ancient Indian kingdoms before Western colonization and Islamic influence, so you won’t expect Spanish influenced structures in the town of Manila. But those on stilt wooded houses floating on the water are common in shanty town side of Manila and a common structures in Bajau village located at Muslim Mindanao region.

Davao: The crown jewel city

Oh wait, do I see dead skulls? Am I in Davao city or in Skull Island? I’m wondering what monsters lurks outside the town, King Kong?

Reception of Atlantica Online MMORPG has been highly positive, receiving a number of awards in 2008. The game is acclaimed for its innovative turn-based battle system and which requires gamers to think a little instead of just mashing buttons. If you want to immerse yourself in the witty gameplay and exploring real world scenaries mixed with mythological and fantasy elements. Just follow the step by step download and installation instruction guide after the jump.

1.  Go to Atlantica Official Website and click Downloads. Check your minimum and recommended requirements below:

2. When you think your PC specs has passed the needed requirements, you can start downloading by clicking the Full Client Download (1.8 MB) as shown below.

3. After downloading the software, double click the Atlantica Full Client to begin the installation. When you are prompted with Terms of Use, just press I Agree button to proceed

4. Wait for few moments while it’s downloading initial files needed to download the complete Atlantica application. Then you’ll be prompted with a message “Where would you like to save Atlantica Online”, just browse where you want it saved. Just make sure your have 15-20 gigabytes of space on your harddrive as the actual application size when I downloaded the full app + Atlantica patches, had reached exactly 10 gig.  Press Next button to continue.

5. It will automatically download the basic files at about 1.8 GB.

6. When downloading is finished, Go  the downloaded directory and click SetupAtlantica.exe  to install it to your operating system. Just follow the common instructions to begin installing to your PC.

7. After installing the software, start the Atlantica program, and it will open the game’s launcher. Any patches needed will be automatically made through the launcher.

8. Once updates has been downloaded and patch is completed. Press the big START button then press OK button to exit the prompted window.

9. If you want to share the Atlantica application to your friends. They don’t need to download everything from scratch. You can copy the whole “nDoors” folder, where setup and patch programs are located, to your portable drive or burn it on DVD double layer (DVD+DL). The size of the whole Atlantica folder is approximately 7.7 GB in size while the Setup folder is about 2.58 GB.

10. Just click the Atlantica Online shortcut on your desktop to launch the game. Congratulations! Your journey to Atlantis is ready to begin. Clicky-click  here to continue.

To give you a quick idea about the jobs, at the start of your quest you can choose a career for your main character from 7 classes such as Swordsman, Spearman, Archer, Gunner, Artilleryman ,Shaman and Monk, then as you progress in your quest, you can recruit more characters with a brand new career to join you in all of your adventures! That’s not all, you can even upgrade each of your men to a ladder-like levels. Like if you chose a Shaman career, it will become a High Shaman at level 50, then a Great Shaman at 80, Okuni at 100, until you reach Hero Okuni at a maximum level. Grinding at MMOs and Me

Grinding in online games seem to be something that is generally accepted throughout the gaming community. Most people abhor it unless the game offers something that makes grinding worth it. The thing that has always helped me stay at the grind is focusing on these in-game goals. But what if there really isn’t a goal to grind to?

That’s happened in Dofus for me and I guess I generally just avoid grinding in that game now. Unless of course there are friends around for me to hang out with.

Thus far, most of the in-game goals in Dofus have seem to be spells or items but past level 100 you don’t really see that much of a gain in spells (you don’t even get any new spell between level 100 – 199 not including the spells you can get by completing quests) so most of it is really leveling to meet the requirements for certain equipments. Which is generally fine for me but I’ve reached a point where the power difference that new equipments offer my main character are negligible at best.

This brings me over to Atlantica. Granted I’m not exactly high level in this game (yet) but so far the game has pretty much hand held me through my leveling path. From the noob quests till now, the main quest has led me through several places each with a rising difficulty curve to meet my new levels. Much like a single player RPG you are taken place to place by the game as you level and solve an npc’s problems.

The point is, Atlantica seems to be all about catering to the inevitable need of grinding by making you fight harder enemies and with new changes in location. Granted the same thing pretty much happens in Dofus but the main difference is that Atlantica hand holds you through it all and seems to intend to until you’re very very close to the end game. Meanwhile, I’m still killing the same mobs in Dofus that I’ve killed 50 levels ago.

Grinding in online games is inevitable but to me, a good game should do it’s best to make the process as interesting as possible.
