I recently found this “Top 10 Problems with MMO’s” topic shared by GMTristan.com. This IGN article talks about the factors in MMOs that persistently annoys its players and takes the genre away from potential users.

Either you love them or hate them, here’s my take on the ten plagues of MMOs that should be avoided by the gaming industry in the future, after the jump…

10. Elves

Elves are inevitable. Even the Star Trek Online has its own half-breed or hybrid elven form character no other than Mr. Spocks. Banning elves from MMos is racism!

9. Humans

Gold farmers, hackers, and bots (run by humans) are the ones severely hurting the MMO industry. These  shirtless scumbags must be castrated to prevent them from diluting the gene pool of the human race.

8. Perverts

You’d think twice if you think that the world of MMO is safe for your children when they are left home alone by themselves after reading this bizarre article headlined “Proof Paedophiles are using HOME”. Totally disgusting indeed!

7. No Consequences

I’ve been dreaming of an MMO that can give an exclusive quest for each player  which could trigger an event that affects the whole nation or major changes in the story and environment. How about a time travel based MMO, where altering the past or present time, will drastically change the future.

6. No Story

You’ve collected the required keys, defeated the boss, and finally made it to the Imperial Gate. What’s next? Most MMO’s are derivative, they shamelessly copy other games without bringing an exciting new twist to the story

5. The Grind

You need a significant time investment (as well as hard earned money) before you can reach your character level’s magic number. That’s how P2p system is designed. MMO publishers never runs out of gimmicks to make your progress in the game draggingly slower than molasses.

4. PC Focus

Blizzard has reiterated for a zillionth time that no Xbox 360 or PS3 port of World of Warcraft is being planned. WOW was not really designed to work with consoles. It’s just more like a square peg on a round hole thing for the game.

3. Too Little Roleplaying

MMO’s is designed to make you escape reality. Your imagination and excitement cut short after hearing a group of orcs blubbering about job recessions, stimulus bills, and taylor swift drama. This is RPG  not Twitter, damn people!

2. Death

New study reveals that common adult video-game addicts are overweight, introverted, and often depressed. Death is a curse to those  sitting around gold farming 18 hours a day, nuff said.

1. All About Stats

I think this has already been resolved in Atlantica Online MMO. Your character’s success or failures rates on monster quests to pvp depends largely on the methodology of stunning and time limit.  The random dice roll doesn’t exist in the game at all.

If you have read my article called “Do you have what it takes to be the next Spam Queen?” it actually explains everything about this obnoxious online game browser, the one that must not be named before, ehem Evony. The ubiquitous ads of Evony seems inescapable as they hog the ad space in every gaming site or non-gaming sites we visit.  Since countless bloggers and advertisers complained to Google regarding this spam abuse of Evony, this is their early Christmas to all of us:

Well speaking of the devil, UMGE Group, a  publicaly listed game development company out of China, wants to dominate the online gaming market through their shady Evony, as well as dominating the advertisement world too. Now, it seems their next tactic for supremacy is to control the bloggers and media people by threatening them with lawsuits. Bruce Everiss, a veteran games industry marketer who runs a website at http://www.bruceongames.com/, is their first victim of this nonsense libel case they filed in Australia. The armchairdiplomat.com blog also criticize this move as saying “Now setting aside the obvious dick move on UMGE’s part by suing a UK blogger in Australia for a game owned by a Chinese company who’s servers are in America, doesn’t something have to be proved to be incorrect to technically be defamatory?” and PopeHat.com witty response “Its Lawyers Rely Upon, Act Like Boobs”. Even the British daily newspaper “Guardian” received a legal complaint from Evony LLC and the demanding to remove the controversial article “Has Evony become the most despised game on the web?” So I want to ask the same question I’ve been pondering, has the Evony become the most despised game on the web? Oppps, don’t say anything defamatory or Evony will shoot errr sue! Are adult MMO gamers the new couch potato?  According to the report in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, they find links between video gaming and health issues in older demographics aged 35 years old and above.

The author of  the said article, Dr. James B Weaver III, has hypothesized that adults who choose to have sedentary lifestyle which is just play the addicting video games are the ones vulnerable to risky health issues, such as higher BMI and poor mental-health days.

They find out that the average of these adult video-game addicts are overweight, low extroversion, and often depressed. These factors make them sacrifice real-world physical activities in exchange of secluded lifestyle. They also compared the time spent of these adult gaming enthusiasts versus the non-players in the internet through online gaming and online game support, apparently this is also in connection with adults in massive online games, days and night non-stop grinding.

They are quoted as saying that further research among adults will be conducted to on how use digital opportunities more effectively to promote health and prevent disease.

Beware of the latest XBL update, according to gaming guide writer Vhaste. He just updated his Xbox360 with the latest firmware patch and then booom, Red Ring of Death! My friend Vhaste is just one of the newest casualties of the dreaded Xbox360 epic fail. He found this statement from a thread where the topic starter has the same experience as he had. Here’s the quote:

“On Tuesday, Microsoft has released an Xbox 360 software update that overwrites the first stage bootloader of the system. Although there have been numerous software updates for Microsoft’s gaming console in the past, this is the first one to overwrite the vital boot block. Any failure while updating this will break the Xbox 360 beyond repair. Statistics from other systems have shown that about one in a thousand bootloader updates goes wrong, and unless Microsoft has a novel solution to this problem, this puts tens of thousands of Xboxes at risk.”

I can’t believe Microsoft released such a risky, dangerous update that may ruin consoles “beyond repair”. I can’t find the official statement’s site but the explanation is very logical. I hope this serves as warning for you guys. A perfectly working machine, ruined by a stupid update…

If you are a die-hard Warhammer fan, you might already know that the fantasy MMO was based on the Games Workshop Warhammer Fantasy table-top miniatures. They also made a spin-off titled Warhammer 40k, set in a science fantasy universe. There are War gamers who are insanely devoted and display their uber-skills in modding their warhammer figurines. They are notorious for their barbaric cruelty on Hello Kitty toys as they mutilate their body parts, vandalize them with morbid paint and jab them with grotesque accessories. I guess we can forgive them since they brought them out sick and disturbingly cute all at once. Hello Kitticus is a smaller power of chaos, who was a benevolent god, when slaneesh emerged, Hello Kitticus was sucked into chaos Maelstrom and was changed forever. It ideals of cuteness was still there but now perverted. It looked on the Human empire with disdain, all these darkness and fear inspiring architecture, Hello Kitticus would bring cuteness and loveliness back to the imperium even if it would be destroy it in the process.
The bright cats space marine chapter would be the first to be converted. On the just liberated planet of Sanrio, Chapter commander Halokaton found a small cute statue, after the battle. He felt an unnatural attraction to this statue and secretly he took it with him as a spoil of war and hid it in his chamber. The following campaigns Hello Kitticus slowly corrupted the chapter commander, and Halo was converted to the ways of cuteness. He hid the idol at the chapter chapel and after him the chaplains were the first to convert. It was during the charmy campaign that the
whole chapter changed and showed its “true” color, dropping their former chapter colors the marines emerged in a multitude of bright colors. Hello Kitticus was pleased and gave the marines the gift of his face. The chapter now renamed to the hello kitty chapter, massacred their allies in a cute fashion, who fled in confusion and disarray because of the mental anguish caused by the intolerable cuteness level.

When the inquisition later came to investigate the planet, they were horrified to find joyfull happy people worshipping, idols of hello kitty, wearing cute clothes and accessories and had painted their cities in joyfull colors, singing songs of praise for Hello Kitticus. The inquisition dealt accordingly with this heresy of worshipping a false god and ordered Exterminatus.

But the Hello Kitty Chapter already had left for another planet to show the cute ways of Hello Kitticus

In the event that you are a socially adjusted member of the general population that has never had the privilege of becoming a Level 42 Warlock leading a guild on a vision quest to the Shlomi Caves in order to attain the Elixir of Suffering while simultaneously attacking left over General Tso’s at 11 PM on a Saturday in your parents’ basement on your 34^th birthday, let us clarify that MMORPG stands for Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. The most popular of the genre, World of Warcraft, has a following of over 11.5 million subscribers! Unlike regular video games, MMORPGs do not… ever… stop. Gamers who cease game play to participate in real life (i.e. sleeping, dating, face-to-face contacting) sacrifice precious opportunities to battle orks and gain virtual wealth, power and influence… in front of a computer screen… sitting in a chair!

MMORPGs provide an escape from reality. People who have trouble holding a steady job can climb the ranks from troll to guild master in the online fantasy world with a little dedication. Repulsive, socially awkward 40 year old virgins can consummate cyber-weddings with some creative double-clicking of the mouse. The MMORPG system rewards dedication to a virtual environment while promoting decay of a person’s life in the real world.

After a few years as intense gamer junkies, participants discover deteriorated health, decreased confidence in regular social settings, and dimmer career prospects. This does not bode well for their reproductive chances. In the event that MMORPG Addicts retrain their atrophied muscles, succeed in seeking out a mate, figure out how to procreate, and possess a high-enough sperm count to fertilize an egg, the descendants of these misfits have the odds stacked against them. They will be practically born into a virtua-land themselves; finding that the best way to connect with their parents is to get attached to the machine as well, feeding the addictive personalities they inherited.

MMORPG Addicts consume energy, food, and space while offering minimal returns to the society that supports them, but damn… they can really lead a guild and slay a one-eyed monster. Until these transfixed drones unplug, it’s best for the real world that they keep their own one-eyed monsters in their pants.

Brandon Routh, widely recognized for playing the titular hero in 2006 film Superman Returns, recently attended the San Diego Comic-Con and just like the hottie Megan Fox, he has proved his geek cred during an interview with MTV Splash Page’s Rick Marshall. He has revealed that he’s a true-blooded gamer and even plays the undisputed MMO king “World of Warcraft”. Brandon is apparently excited about the upcoming movie adaptation helmed by Sam Raimi and might look forward to join the cast as long as there’s kick-ass sword fighting. Though his “Superman Returns” movie didn’t do well at the box office, his performance as the man of steel is at par with the iconic Christopher Reeves. I’ve also seen his comedy movie “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” and i think he’s fairly decent character actor. If he’s looking for a menacing role with a sword, he can perfectly play the character of Arthas Menethil, the crowned prince of Lordaeron who later became one of the most powerful and evil beings Azeroth would ever experience when he merged with the Lich King. Brandon can now throw away his super cape and pull out the sword of Frostmourne. Hail to the king, baby!

This Chinese fantasy-themed MMORPG is being marketed as DJ2 but really shall be called BO2 because, in Chinese, its literal translation is Blade Online 2. Based on the video trailer, the plot is like an epic love tragedy about two lovers being torn apart as the guy comes from a certain race of beast. I don’t have full details of the gameplay yet but it probably focus on power struggle between two tribes, one the magical elves fighting to preserve the tradition, and the other, the misjudged beast seeking for justice and revenge

8. Mission Against Terror

Mission Against Terror (MAT) is an an online first-person shooter (FPS)  where it integrated aspects of traditional Chinese culture and provides an exhilarating local element for Asia and for worldwide players. Players can join either the terror group, the counter-terrorist team, and even the legions of grotesque zombies. Each team attempts to complete their mission objective and/or eliminate (or eating them alive) the opposing team. Dolby’s Axon voice technology will be used for the live conferencing between users. 9. Heroine Anthem Online

“Heroine Anthem Online” is a side-scrolling MMORPG which is different from most classic Chinese RPGs, being set in a fantasy land and not in historical China. I’m not sure yet if the battles will be turn-based just like the classic Heroine 1 & 2 but i can say the story revolves around legend of mermaids and we will be immersed with its realistic environments from its lush terrains to under the sea exploration.

12.  Yume Sekai

Japan made MMORPG game  “Yume Sekai”  is all about pets, mounted battle and transform system. I think this is the cutest MMORPG presented at China Joy 2009. You can ride on assorted adorable four legged creatures and bring your pets during your quests, as well you mutate yourself into savage beast but the good thing there still remains a slight cutesy in those monster’s built.
